This girl is three!

She had a party the day before her actual birthday, at the pool!

3 candles! She was very Concerned about them.

Those cupcakes are chocolate with chocolate cream cheese swirl frosting, which is what the young lady requested. She helped make them, because she and Ryan are the bakers of our household, and she was very pleased with them.

We had a really great time.

Since her birthday she has spent most of her at-home time playing the drum she got, building things out of Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs with Ryan, dressing her magnetic “paper” dolls, spelling with her letter stamps (and grown up help ;)) and playing Pop Up Pirate. She also got a wooden boat with a string from Ryan and I, which is something she has been longing for ever since she saw a picture of one in a Mister Putter and Tabby book. She took it to bed with her the first night and right into the kiddie pool the next day!

Adele also had a birthday since our last post (was started ;)). She had a party at the playground, which was very fun…except for the busted forehead Sophie came home with!

Ouch.

She tripped and her sunglasses got jammed into her forehead. It looked worse than it was, but it looks pretty hardcore, yeah? She’s healing nicely now.

To make up for that sad shot, here is a shot of both birthday girls, on a day that was neither’s birthday, in co-ordinating swimsuits in the pool at our house:

See, that's cute, right?

Along with being very expresive and verbal comes the non-stop chatter and monologuing. Here’s a sample, taken as we walked to our car after Arlo’s birthday party, on an unseasonably cool evening (note the long sleeves!):

At the beginning of three, here are some of Sophie’s favorite things:

Movies: are probably the same as last time we talked about favorites, except now she has seen and loved “The Secret World of Arrietty”. Miyazaki, we heart you.

Sophie watching "My Neighbor Totoro" with her stuffed friends, including Totoro himself. She is singing along with the theme song.

Books:
The Bats books by Brian Lies, right now especially “Bats at the Beach”.
“When the Relatives Came” by Cynthia Rylant, “Eloise Takes a Bawth”, and Ladybug Girl by David Soman.
We always have at least one Mister Putter and Tabby book out of the library and she always enjoys a Sandra Boynton book, “Snuggle Puppy” being a special favorite.
Also, we found “Jingle the Christmas Clown” by Tomie DePaola at a book sale, and she chooses that one often. Christmas in July!

Music:
The Muppets “Green Album”. We borrowed it from the library and she listens to it almost every day. Sometimes she will sit on the couch and just listen to the whole thing, taking it in very intensely. When she sings “Rainbow Connection”, we almost dissolve with the sweetness of it. The Rainbow Connection, people! Sung very earnestly by a 3 year old person! It is almost too much.

Vermont Joy Parade! Last year we saw them perform in a fountain on Church Street during the Festival of Fools, and she has loved them ever since. Their CD is often playing when I get up in the morning.

Robyn’s “Body Talk” album…with the way inappropriate songs edited out. :)

Songs: “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles, “Elevator Love Letter” by Stars, “Lollipop” by Mika, “Chicago” by Sufjan Stevens, “Maps” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, “All is Love” by Karen O and the Kids…and she really likes “Somebody I Used to Know” by Gotye and “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepson but who doesn’t like those songs, really? ;) Pumped Up Kicks is still with us, as well.

She is becoming cranky about music she doesn’t know, she wants to be able to sing along all the time…so we’re working on Diversifying Our Musical Experience and also This Is How We Learn New Songs.

Here she is singing The Rainbow Connection…well, half of it, since Flickr only lets me upload videos that are less than 90 seconds. At the beginning, you should know that she begins the song with a “deedle deedle deedle deedle dee”, which adds a certain OMGADORABLE.

Favorite things to do:
Yoga class, parks and playgrounds, bike riding with her dad, Summervale and Burger Night, playing in the kiddie pool, swimming at the actual pool, visiting grandparents, going out for ice cream, going to American Flatbread. Playing with Play Doh, eating popsicles, writing on Post-it notes, eating blueberries on the grass at the farmer’s market, reading huge stacks of books with us. Sharing a plate of grapes with her dad while reading books on our bed is seriously something she asks to do all the time. She loves to water the plants on our deck.

Sophie and Sapphire playing with the teacher at the end of my yoga class.

Patting Paul's head while pretending to sleep.

She wakes up every morning asking me “what is our plan for today?” Partly because she’s like me, and wants to know what’s coming… but also because life is so exciting, and she can’t wait to find out what we get to do this time. I love how joyful that makes everything feel. Going to the grocery store? Awesome, I get to have a banana and put the groceries on the belt! We have library books due? Great, I get to play with their baby dolls and do puzzles and get lots of new books. No plan? I get to stay home and listen to my music and play with my toys and water some plants. I think she’s on to something, and I try to stay in that spirit myself.

So much grinning she could hardly speak!

We love this kid so much. She is awesome. Happy birthday, Sophie Florence. <3
